Does my car need a VARTA EFB battery?
Many cars with standard start-stop technology use an EFB battery. But what is it, and why does fitting the right battery matter?
What does EFB mean?
EFB stands for “Enhanced Flooded Battery”. In simple terms, it’s a higher-performance development of the traditional car battery.
It’s designed to handle more frequent starting, charging and discharging than a conventional battery can. EFB’s are commonly used in vehicles with basic start-stop systems and also suit vehicles with higher electrical demands.
Why does a start-stop car need a different battery?
Start-stop vehicles usually switch the engine off when you stop at traffic lights or in heavy traffic, then restart it when you move away. That’s way more stopping and starting than you’d ever expect in traditional vehicles.
At the same time, the battery may still be helping to power things like:
- lights
- air conditioning
- audio and infotainment
- phone charging
- heated and powered seats
- other electrical systems

Can I replace an EFB battery with a normal battery?

Where an EFB battery is fitted, it should be replaced with the appropriate EFB battery or, in some applications, an AGM upgrade might be considered.

Both are designed for vehicles with higher battery demands. But they’re not the same.
