VARTA’s EV story goes back to the 1800s

VARTA has one of the longest automotive battery histories in the world, with its roots going back to 1887.

There aren’t many battery companies that can claim to have powered electric cars over 130 years ago. But back in 1893, batteries made by the company that would become the predecessor of VARTA powered the Baker “Runabout” electric car when it was introduced to Germany.

So electric cars were around long before apps, fast chargers and the giant touchscreen dashboards you find with today’s EVs. And over a century later, VARTA is still part of the EV story.

Modern EVs still need a 12-volt battery

Everyone knows that today’s EVs use a large high-voltage battery to power the electric motor. But a lot of people don’t realise they also rely on a much smaller 12-volt battery to support all the important systems that help to run your vehicle. Things like electronics, locking, controls and safety systems.

Which means even an EV can still have a flat battery. And if that 12-volt battery’s getting weak, it can cause problems even when the main EV battery still has plenty of charge.
