Many people think an electric vehicle only has one battery, the large high-voltage battery that drives the car. But every EV also has a smaller 12-volt battery, and that battery plays a very important role.

The 12-volt battery powers many of the vehicle’s everyday systems, including central locking, lights, control modules, safety systems, dashboard functions and start-up electronics. In simple terms, the main EV battery moves the vehicle, but the 12-volt battery helps wake the vehicle up and get everything working.

This means a flat or failing 12-volt battery can stop an EV from operating properly. In some cases, the vehicle may not unlock, power up or shift into drive, even though the main high-voltage battery is fully charged.

A 12-volt automotive battery will often last around four to five years, depending on use, vehicle type and conditions. If your EV is now in that age bracket, it is a good idea to have the 12-volt battery tested before it becomes a problem. In many cases, replacing it early is far easier than dealing with a vehicle that will not wake up or start when you need it.

EV 12-volt batteries can weaken over time just like batteries in petrol and diesel vehicles. Age, short trips, infrequent use, high electrical demand and long periods parked can all affect battery condition.
