Flat Car Battery? Common Causes and What to Do Next

A flat battery is a real pain, and it usually happens when you are already running late. You jump in, turn the key or push the button, and get nothing, maybe a few clicks, a slow crank, or a dash full of warning lights. The good news is, a flat battery does not always mean the battery is stuffed. It may simply be discharged, or there could be something else going on with the vehicle that needs checking. 

One of the most common causes is leaving lights, interior lamps or accessories on while the vehicle is parked. Even a small power draw can drain the battery if it is left long enough. Short trips can also cause problems. If you are only driving around town or doing quick school runs, the battery may not get enough time to recharge properly.

Over time, it can become weak and unreliable. Battery age is another factor. As batteries get older, they lose their ability to hold charge. A battery that seemed fine last month can start to struggle when the weather changes or the vehicle is under more electrical load. Sometimes it is not the battery at all. A faulty alternator, charging issue, loose connection, starter motor problem or electrical drain can all leave you with a flat battery. A jump-start might get you moving, but it does not tell you why the battery went flat.

 If it happens more than once, it is worth getting the battery and charging system checked properly.
