Is a VARTA AGM battery right for my car?
Today’s cars use more electrical power than ever before. Start-stop systems, heated seats, electric tailgates, cameras, infotainment systems and other electronics all place extra demand on the battery. That’s why many modern vehicles are factory-fitted with an AGM battery.
But what’s an AGM battery, and does your car really need one?
What does AGM mean?
AGM stands for “Absorbent Glass Mat”. It’s an advanced type of lead-acid battery designed to cope with higher electrical demands and repeated charging and discharging. In simple terms, an AGM battery is built for a tougher job than a conventional car battery.
Why do modern cars need them?

Can I replace an AGM battery with a normal battery?
This is where getting the right advice matters. If your vehicle was designed to use an AGM battery, you shouldn’t simply replace it with a cheaper conventional battery. VARTA specifically advises that an AGM battery should be replaced with another AGM battery. Like for like.
Using the wrong battery can affect start-stop operation, vehicle comfort functions and battery life. Some vehicles also have a Battery Management System that needs to recognise or register the replacement battery.
